Guadalupe, Arizona. April 3 and 4, 2008 - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) led by Sheriff Joe Arpaio conducted a two-day "crime suppression" raid in the small town of Guadalupe, Arizona consisting, like previous operations, of saturation patrols. Guadalupe is a small community located between the cities of Phoenix and Tempe. According to information from MCSO, they conducted this two-day raid in Guadalupe with 200 deputies and members of Sheriff Arpaio's posse on April 3 and 4. The MCSO's command center was set in the parking lot of a store called Family Dollar on Guadalupe Road and near Avenida del Yaqui. However, on the second day of the operation, the MCSO was forced to move their command center to a MCSO substation in Mesa near Baseline Road and Mesa Drive, since residents, activists and community organizers were present at the two-day raid and confronted the MCSO with anger and much resistance by yelling and displaying hand-made signs with a variety of messages against MCSO and Sheriff Arpaio. For activists, MCSO's "crime suppression" operations are nothing but "immigration raids," where according to immigrant's advocates MCSO posse members and sheriff deputies engage in racial profiling to target and stop Latino motorists based on physical appearance features such as brown skin. For this operation, MCSO utilized helicopters, deputies and posse members some on horseback wearing helmets, patrol cars, unmarked SUVs, sedans, and motorcycles. According to MCSO, on April 3 their deputies and posse arrested 26 individuals for a variety of crimes, five (5) of whom were determined to be illegal aliens. Photo by Eduardo Barraza © 2008
