Goldfield Ghost Town in Goldfield, Arizona is located 40 miles southeast of Phoenix -at the base of the Superstition Mountains- and it has been called "Gateway to the Superstition Mountains." Thanks to the discovery of gold in 1892, the town turned into a booming community with a population of four to five thousand people. Facilities included a hotel, a general store, three saloons, boarding houses, a blacksmith, a school house, a hotel, a meat market and a brewery. The mining district had at one point 50 gold mines. While Goldfield's growth and wealth was promising, a decrease in the gold deposits caused Goldfield to decline. Further attempts to bring back Goldfield to its thriving days between 1910 and 1926 failed. Today, Goldfield Ghost Town is a very interesting Arizona tourist spot that draws thousands of visitors a year with attractions like a tour to the underground mines, a ride in the only Arizona-operating narrow gauge train, a Main Street with retail shops, Old West buildings, a Gold Panning shop, and a museum among others. The Goldfield Superstition Museum offers visitors various exhibits about the town and nearby geology. Old mining machinery, tools and artifacts and old vehicles give the impression that time stopped in Goldfield, giving this town a genuine ghost-town charm. On some weekends, volunteer Old West performers offer gun fight shows. Goldfield also offers a spectacular view of Superstition Mountains. Photo by Eduardo Barraza © 2012
