The Hassayampa River Preserve is located near Wickenburg, Arizona, sixty miles northwest of Phoenix. The Hassayampa River, where the preserve takes its name from, flows underground for most of its 100-mile course through the Arizona desert, emerging in the preserve area, mostly during the rainy season. The Hassayampa River Preserve was purchased by The Nature Conservancy in 1986. Bird watchers have reportedly spotted over 280 species of birds at this preserve. The visitor’s center has a list of recent bird sightings in the area. The word Hassayampa is an old Indian word meaning “the river that flows upside down.” Visitors can expect to see desert vegetation such as cottonwood/willow riparian forest, desert fan palms, plus Sonoran Desert species such as saguaro, barrel and cholla cactus, mesquite, paloverde, and spring wildflowers.
