Coyoacan, Mexico City - A promotional newspaper-like poster reproduces a famous headline of a Mexican publication informing readers about Leon Trotsky's death. The "Leon Trotsky Killed!" poster is on display in the the Leon Trotsky House Museum, a venue honoring Leon Trotsky. The site also houses an organization that works to promote political asylum. The museum is a favorite destination of millions of tourists every year, and it is located in the Coyoacan borough of Mexico City. The museum was built next to the house in which Trotsky lived with his second wife Natalia Sedova from 1939 to 1940, and where the Russian dissident was also murdered and buried. The house has been preserved as it was at that time where Trotsky lived there, in particular the study in which Joseph Stalin' supporter Ramon Mercader killed Trotsky with an ice axe to the back of the head. Around the house is a garden and high walls with watchtowers. The complex was turned into the current museum and asylum institution in 1990, on the 50th anniversary of the assassination. Coyoacan's name comes from Nahuatl it likely meaning "place of coyotes". Hernán Cortes and the Spanish conquistadors used this area as a headquarters during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. They also made it the first capital of New Spain between 1521 and 1523. In recent times, has been a counterculture hotbed and where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived, a few blocks away from Leon Trotsky. Due the historic and cultural relevance, their homes are now the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Leon Trotsky Museum, which are visited by thousands of tourists every year. Modern-day Coyoacan is a quiet residential area with cobblestone streets, restaurants, parks, squares, and a favorite hangout for bohemia enthusiasts. Photo by Eduardo Barraza © Copyright
