Phoenix, Arizona - As Arizona Senators work on proposed legislation to prohibit students who are living without authorization in the state from enrolling in school, students from Carl Hayden Community High School -a West Side Phoenix public school- organized a march to the Arizona State Capitol. Nine students coordinated the march which took place after school hours. An estimated 200 hundred students and some teachers walked from the school to the Capitol to oppose Senate Bill 1611. If signed into law, SB 1611 would require school districts in Arizona to verify the legal status of any students attending public schools. Those unable to prove their legal status would be unable to enroll. As of October 2010, Carl Hayden High School had approximately 225 faculty and 2,255 students. The campus is located in a predominantly Latino immigrant neighborhood. Demonstrators and opponents of the bill consider it a potential violation of the Plyler v Doe decision, a 1982 Supreme Court law that prohibits states from conditioning access to public education to children regardless of their immigration status.
