Phoenix, Arizona – Established in 1993, the Maricopa County "Tent City" Jail has housed nearly 500,000 inmates. The outdoor facility houses both male and female inmates in old Korean War army tents. The jail exposes inmates to high temperatures during the summer. Inmates sleep under the tents and wear the old-fashioned jail uniform black-and-white stripes uniforms. These images correspond to the celebration of the 18th anniversary that took place in the same spot where Sheriff Arpaio announced in 1993 the establishment of this jail. A granite marker was unveiled to commemorate the 18th anniversary. "Tent City" has been a target of much criticism since its opening, but Sheriff Arpaio says the conditions there are similar to the situation for U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who also live in tents and under harsh climate conditions.
